Before replacing your coffee maker, check the coffee, the recipe, and the cleaning. A bitter cup can come from several things, and the machine isn’t always the problem.
When Did You Last Wash the Coffee Parts?
Old coffee oils can leave a taste behind. Wash the basket, carafe, and other removable coffee parts as the instructions describe. Just rinsing the pot may not remove everything.
Cleaning and descaling do different jobs. One removes coffee residue; the other tackles minerals in the water path. Our cleaning and descaling guide explains both.
Could It Be the Roast?
A darker roast can taste more bitter or smoky than a lighter one. Try a small bag of a different coffee before assuming you need a different brewer. Use coffee you enjoy drinking, not just a bag with an espresso label.
Try Changing One Thing
Keep the coffee and water amounts consistent. If the grind is too fine for the brewing method, try a small change and taste the next cup. Don’t change the dose, grind, and every setting at once, or you won’t know what helped.
Has the Pot Been Sitting?
Coffee kept on a warming plate can become less pleasant over time. If you only drink two mugs, make a smaller batch rather than a large pot that waits for hours.
A thermal-carafe coffee maker may suit people who pour at different times, though it won’t keep the flavor fresh forever.
What About Bitter Espresso?
Make the shot repeatable first. Use the same coffee dose and measure the amount in the cup. If it’s running unusually slowly, try a slightly coarser grind while keeping the rest steady.
A machine such as the Breville Barista Express gives you adjustments, but the beans and preparation still matter. Start there before spending more on equipment.
