You can use coffee beans that don’t say “espresso” on the bag. Espresso is a brewing method, not a special kind of bean. The important parts are the grind, the preparation, and whether you like the result.
Can You Use Regular Preground Coffee?
Coffee ground for a drip brewer may be too coarse for a traditional espresso setup. The basket matters too: a pressurized basket can behave differently from an unpressurized one.
Follow the guidance for the basket that comes with your machine. Don’t assume the coffee you use in a pot will work the same way in an espresso handle.
Do You Need a Dark Roast?
Not necessarily. Darker and lighter coffees can both be used for espresso, but they taste different and may need different adjustments. Start with a coffee you enjoy and use small changes to get the cup closer to what you want.
What About Fully Automatic Machines?
Follow the machine’s recommendations for beans. Don’t pour ground coffee into a whole-bean hopper. Some models have a separate opening for preground coffee, but only use it if the instructions say it’s supported.
The Philips 3300 LatteGo is a different daily setup from a hands-on machine such as the Breville Bambino.
Can You Put Loose Coffee in a Capsule Machine?
Not in place of the capsule unless the machine supports a specific compatible accessory. Make sure you buy the right coffee format. Original, Vertuo, K-Cup, and Lavazza systems aren’t interchangeable.
Keep the First Few Cups Consistent
Use the same coffee amount and serving while you learn. Changing the beans, grind, and every setting at once makes it difficult to know why the taste changed.
Our grinder guide and pods vs. grounds guide can help you choose the equipment and format.
